Hey hybrid john,
I live in the Metro Detroit area and as you may know this place is the 'Motor City'. Surprisingly enough, there are alot of talented designers and engineers here (they just have their hands tied way too much by bean counters and such). I have sold quite a few New VW's to designers and engineers here. A few have become really close friends, one of which did that sketch for me. He is working on a few more for me as we speak of the front and the rear. My/his inspiration was from the Renault Alpine 110 (For those too immersed in the VW culture to see the rest of the world, this car looks - in my opinion - alot like my Ghia in style and lines.) which has been raced and there are alot of spoiler and rear lip/wing piccies out there. I started a thread about the Ghia's lack of downforce (actually too much lift) and spoke about needing a ft spoiler to help tame the 170lbs of lift in front and 70lbs of lift in the rear (@100mph). I was showing my friend Mitch this site and he started lurking here, read my post and said "hey stupid, I'll make some sketches for you as long as you promise to spell my name right!) So...Auerbach is the designer If you want to see the big picture send me a message and I'll forward the file to you. I tried to post in in this section but it's too large. Enjoy. |

Dorigtt, Can you tell me at what speed a ghia becomes airborn?
Thanks Ron |

I never said 'airborn', just that at 100mph the front end produces 170 lbs of lift and the rear produces 70 lbs at that same speed. My goals are to reduce that which will only improve stability at all speeds above 50mph in my estimation.
The Ghia hasn't been known to fly like the Beetles have, though there aren't as many Ghias being used for drag racing and other speed events like the Beetles have. Hopefully I never find out that it does! |

With that lift at 100mph I would guess it would need to go at least 120 before take off wind energy has a square relationship with wind speed and the actual lift is reduced from that since the coefficient is less than one. I do not knoqw the formula to figure it out, but it would be interesting to know. I don't think a Ghia has ever done 120 in the 1/4 without one of those mega spoilers on it.

(Just for laughs)... I remember seeing an article in Hot Rod magazine about a booster rocket... some guy put it in an old 70's police editon Chevy to test it out! Well the rocket work alright, and when he hit a bump he took off like plane and landed in a junk pile almost a mile away (think it was a mile?!?).
How bout you try that man and tell me what its like I'll do it if you do it (anybody)! If I can find it, remember, this rocket produced 1000 pounds of boost, and was five feet long, and reusable with rocket fuel! John

You need to watch MYTHBUSTERS on TLC they dispove or prove urban legends and they did the car with a rocket on it and they disproved that myth the car never left the ground but it was cool to watch
