Knock sensor

Is it possible to use a knock sensor from an modern day car on a t4 engine. |

I've heard of using a knock sensor ignition system from a 1.8L wcvw engine on a type 4. in theory should work great since its could be converted to standalone easily, in practice probably would be trouble, since the timing is not setup for the type 4.
theoretically all you'd need is the dizzy, box, coil and wiring from a '86-89 GLI or GTI probably need to have the dizzy turned down to slip into the type 4 block. and find a suitable place to mount the knock sensor.

Knock retard ignition control is not a stand alone system, but part of a total engine management system, like Bosch Motronic.
As Walter pointed out, the knock retard parameters would have to be taylor-made for a ACVW. Since ACVWs needs so much less total advance compared to many cars made today, there's no practical application to retrofit such a system from.

Yes that is. I should reiterate...
Using one from another vehicle, I.E. VW Golf or Jetta, wouldn't work as THOSE are not stand alone systems.

looking at the wiring diagrams of the CISE system with knock box (86 gli & gti) there are only 5 wires in common between the two boxes (ecu and knock box) power, ground, ignition and WOT switch, that leaves one wire yet to be identified. most of these wires are just simply common connection (I would assume ECU inputs fot ignition and such)
Theoretically it wouldn't take much to mke one of these standalone, but as stated before not a good application for ACVW

Knock three times
I think that the bosch jetronic knock sensor system (type one) with the single knock sensor and without the knock reference programming of the motronic system should work just fine on an aircooled engine. I see only one problem and that is the possibly large difference in Vacuum to the ign load sensor through the vacuum lines. I would try it cos it cant possibly be worse than guessing with a 009.
