Question How to start a rebuilt engine out of car

My next project is converting the 1.8 to upright. But FIRST, I have to finish the current project...
I rebuilt a VW engine and it's still on the stand. How can I start it prior to putting it into the car? I'm using the Energy One starter mount (it's plastic!), and the engine's on a stand. It just doesn't turn over very quickly. If I take the plugs out, it spins fine, so I don't think I screwed up the bearings. Is the starter gounding somehow??
Any ideas?
Thanks-

I'm not too sure about your problem but if you just rebuilt your engine, you might not want to start it out of the car. If you replaced your cam in the rebuild, you're going to have to break it in before anything. Kinda hard to do out of the car. You might cause yourself more problems.
