I've owned this car since I was 15, I'm 32 now! From age 15-18 I completely disassembled the car(sans the motor and tranny), sandblasted, smoothed, filled and painted everything, and them it went back together. It stayed that way until 1999, when something started to make noises AGAIN, and I said forget it, I'm going nuts on this thing. I pulled the motor to make it official and it sat until 2004.

From about 2002 until now I've been planning what to do with it. I knew I was going water cooled, and my original thoughts for power was rotary. The trouble is that I want a car that handles too, and because this IS a lifetime project, I decided to go all the way.

I think the double wishbone front end popped into my mind by itself, and has been growing ever since. People I've learned, discussed, and shared things with include:

Bolts-On

Dobergoose

Ricola Racing

and without doubt the person who has contributed almost everthing that is really important

Rorty Racing

As far as powering this thing, I realized that everything hung out the back of a bug is just a pendulum. Porsche fought with it for years, and unless you want to plant a complete late Porsche suspension into your bug, the only way to get the weight forward is just to move it. Thus the midengine 1.8t.
I wanted something reliable, powerful, relatively lightweight, and VW.

Nobody has ever done this before that I'm aware of, but someone who has been working on it for awhile, but has recently stopped, are the Coopers at

Central VW Audi

Ask away with any questions you have. My email can be reached by going to my website and clicking "Email" at the bottom. Also on there at the top of the home page are the links to the bug stuff, the 1.8t conversion and double wishbone links.

The Ford-VW-Bimmer Page

It's going to be a long haul, so don't hold your breath, but I have a pretty fierce determination, so it will happen!

wow looks like a big project. I have toyed with the mid engin idea but i am going with the 13b turob rotary so the weight is not that much more than the vw motor and will be offset by the rads up front. Good luck with your project.

I took all the parts over to Walt's Custom Services today. He's doing up another amazing Rat Rod of his own. Anyway, the new project he's working on is my front suspension, so as I get pics, I'll post them.

Haven't worked on my baby in earnest for months now, just been moved around and washed, but no progress. It's been a very busy year, mostly with real estate, very productive, but not much in the play catagory. I don't really do New Years resolutions, but I'm hoping to get back at it shortly. I have all the building materials for the brake system and hydrolic clutch, cooling system is almost complete, and one call to Javad at 034 Motorsport will get me a premade wiring harness for the 1.8t so I can hook the IIc ECU up. Throttle pedal is still not found/fabbed, but a piece of string will work-suicide throttle borrowed from Mikey of Orange County Choppers

I have a few questions for you.

1- I see that you went with a double wishbone in the front. Why not in the back?
2- Have you considered dreaming up a double wishbone front end for supers?
3- Why is there what seems to be tie rods for a rack and pinion steering unit in the rear suspension of the car?
4- What spindles were used up front and what spindles in back?
5- How can I get as crazy as you? Are there lessons involved?

1) The front was a large enough project for awhile!!! I actually have plans for rear suspension redesigns too, I'm not sure if it will be double-wishbone though.

2) By just changing the mounting system, my front end would fit just fine, actually it might be easier due to the Super having a rack and pinion system already.

3) The rear end is actually the front end of a Golf MkII, so the rack is still there. It is welded in place, so it doesn't steer, but it was the easiest way to make things work for now.

4) Stock Karmann Ghia spindles up front, MkII Golf spindles in rear.

5) When I built the bug around age 17 I painted the pan and all the parts with very poor ventilation and no respirator, I think that was a good start!!!

My suspension bolts to the front of the frame head, so a bracket could fabricated and welded to suspension to bolt it to the stock front SB mounting points, and the rear mounts already attach to the standard body mounting bolts.

Last one.... for now. LOL. So would the the front trunk of the super have to cut or altered to make it fit? If yes would there be a way to alter the unit to minmize or eliminate any trunk intrusion.

No, no cutting on the body, but I realized that the super doesn't have the space between the pan and the body to slip the suspension into like the standard, so there would have to be an additional plate built like on the rear of mine that made it split. I really think for a super I would just redesign the whole mounting system, I think it would be easier and probably end up being better than the standard one.

Ya think maybe it's bent? It finally would not self-heal and just kept draining coolant, so a new one is now ordered up that is about an inch shorter top/bottom and about 3 inches wider to maintain the same surface area.

The right hand fan is totally crushed, so I've got a new one to replace that one. I'm kinda sad that the new radiator won't fit the fans so nicely, they're going to hang over the top and bottom slightly.
