Flywheel mods for racing !

Hi all,

I've got my car classified in the 'Touring 2' category for SoloOntario road racing.

http://www.germanlook.com/Forums/sho...p?threadid=429

I've been discussing options about modifications to the engine and it turns out that I'm allowed a 13lb flywheel (whatever the stock weight is for a 914 2.0), but I'm running the 18lb bus 210mm unit.

Is there any advantage to getting a 13lb type 4 conversion flywheel for this application? I can make this modification without it costing me any 'PIP' points.

Thanks for any help in this.

Sandeep

well you gain quicker revs, but i don't know how 5 lbs will translate to track speed. i would suspect that it is significant enough, but that would have to be balanced against cost. FAT sells a lightened fly that i am running, but it is under 13 lbs. and will cost you points. you could think about just having your lightened some.

i have read in a racing mod book that taking 1lbs off your flywheel is like taking 140lbs off your car. but this was for the chevy boys with huge flywheels but im sure its still around 90-100lbs for the 210mm flywheel of a T4. so yes, it is worth it if you can do it. go for it.

CRAP !

Now I have to splurge on a T4 forged flywheel. I'm assuming a Kennedy or FAT unit ? I think I read somwhere that the Bus unit can't be lightened. Can someone confirm this please before I spend some cash ?

Thanks

i would ask jake on that one or some other reputable shop owner that maybe has done it. anyone can do it but they say not to lighten the cast ones as its dangerous, especially with high rpm's and HP's.
