You will have to get a race/fab shop, or someone with good aluminum welding skill's to do it... I have never seen one offered just for a SB. Last year in a Hotvw's there was a 1303 in France that had a CF gas tank! The whole car is loaded with one off CF stuff!

I installed an aluminum fuel cell in Herbie X. Pix can be found it the gallery on my website. It is made by FuelSafe and has antislosh foam and a Kevlar bladder. It is a quality cell and holds 16 gal. of fuel.

Need to contact Fuelsafe, and see if they have one for a SB. Herbie is a '63 or '64 STD. The tanks will be different Caveman.

That one was custom made (16 gal and the spare fits and hood shuts). I think it was $2200. But I can't say for sure.

i bought this rci on ebay for around $230.00 it fits in the hole of the orginal stock sell on my bug (59) perfect width wise but its to short length so it doesnt take up the entire orginal hole 12gal alum, i made up some aluminum straps to hold it in place once its in i can post pictures. i dont know when that will be those its rather cold out these days
when i orginally purchased it i just measured the hole and searched until i found something that would fit this was the best i could come up with. beats the cost of having a 2k custom tank made up. |

The 12-gallon version is about eight inches tall. I personally haven't figured out for me if I can still have a spare or a space-saving spare incorporated to where the original tank is. I also haven't figured out where to put the battery. It is not a front-burner project for me yet but I like their products. |

If you can find one that is ready made and make it work it will be MUCH cheaper than having it custom made. The owner of HX wanted this one to fit like stock and hold 16 gal. The Kevlar bladder and foam adds to the price tag as well.

Yeah, the kevlar is a must if one goes this route -- especially in a Beetle/Super IMO. Since ATL does custom work as well, I may see about the "well cell" with kevlar when the time approaches. Their site shows a crumpled fuel cell with kevlar. Convincing enough for me.

I'm still on the fence on what my replacement car will be but I assure you if I go the Super Beetle route again, I will be back onto it again. In fact, if I go with a Super again, it will probably be more on the aggressive side so I will place a higher priority on the fuel cell. The idea got placed on the back-burner with my '71 because I became reluctant to remove the rear seat, move the battery forward, and other contingencies I was weighing at the time (and will be weighing in the future).

I bought a 12gal. ATL well-cell for my 73 super and it fits with room to spare. There's enough room to put the fuel pump next to the tank inside the spare tire well. As for cost, mine ended up around $610 or so if I remember correctly and that includes the fuel sender.
