My new 64 bug

Hey guys I have been wanting a daily driver while my project is under way so I just bought this bug from a friend of mine. It is a total stocker right now well except for the duel carbs and 1776

http://utwired.engr.utexas.edu/dan/vwbug/

I am a big fan of the supers but had to buy this.... Let me know what you think.

As you may or may not know I sell cars for a living. I use to work for Mitsubishi I sold this guy a 2003 Lancer Evolution and at the time he told me about his 64. I was not in the money to buy one at the time... I saw him online this morning and asked him if he still had it and sure enough he did so now she is mine... now i just need to get a ride down to Austin TX from Fort Worth TX to pick her up I guess I will have to call my dad and see if he is up for a road trip.... Man now i have to look at Standard bug GL stuff.... It should be fun...

The trip was fine drove it up from Austin in 95 to 100 degree weather uggg. It ran 65 mph all the way at 3000 rpm. Today I am doing a tune up and cleanning it all up.

Wow how much fun to drive! It has been 10 years or more since i had my last running bug.... I got a ride in a friends 56 oval yesterday with a 2110cc 175hp motor wow that was quick! cant wait to build a motor for mine.

that's good news. congrats. i know you were sweating (no pun intended) the performance of the long trip. glad it worked out. no the real work begins. did you decide which car gets the work first?

Yes Zen, I decided to go with the 64 as it is a very straight car and is going to be a good starting point for now... My super is in really bad shape and would take 5 to 7 years to do with the amount of time i have to spare and as I do not have a garage to store it at the moment, it will be hard to keep all the parts straight if i start taking it apart.

I went to a friends house today and we changed the oil, went to mobile 1 full synthetic. It has a deep sump used 5 quarts to fill it up.
Also Cleaned the K&N air filters man were they dirty!
New cap and wires and plugs but could not get to the 2 plugs close to the fire wall... any one know how to change them on a duel port duel carb motor with out taking the carbs off?

The result was very pleasing... before tune up the best the car would do is a very labored 62mph at 3000 rpm.... Now I hit 78 mph at 4100 rpm and it was still wanting to run... I did not have time to adjust the vaulves today so I did not want to run it too hard.

The merged header to open Stinger pipe is VERY LOUD!!!! I will have to change that some... I am enjoying it for now but it remindes me too much of a Honda with all that bark and no bite... I would rather be silent but deadly

I want to lower the front and rear... what is the best way to lower the front? I have a friend in my VW gang VW gang that has an adustable front for my car and front and rear swayaway sway bars and ajustable spring plates he has a grand into them how much do you think i should pay for all of that? and is Swayaway a good brand?

Ok enough for now... Sure is fun to drive.... can't wait to start moding it up for better performance.....

I bought all sway-a-way stuff when I got my first Beetle (a '65), but that way when I was reading VWTrends and Hot VWs like it was the bible. The CalLook tends to have less expensive bolt-ons than GL, and I was a poor high school kid just getting into it, so naturally I went with what I could afford. Now that I've seen the light and found this site (and the Eurolook forum on Shoptalk) my plans changed. Money is almost no object here, hence the Porsche parts on almost everyones VWs. You can pick up any of the above mentioned magazines and look up the prices for most of the parts he is offering. The prices have come down a little, but the parts themselves haven't changed since I've been working on my Bugs ('96). If I hadn't just bought a oval body for cheap, I would be building a Super instead.

As for the spark plugs, check out this site: removable apron and side walls . There are pictures of a good mod if you are willing to weld a little. Although, I can't understand why this person used what looks like a rubber mat to fill the hole. After going through the trouble of fitting the square tubing, I would've put in at least some aluminum plates.

How many miles on the engine? Did it leak at all when you added the Mobile 1? I've heard of older engines not liking the synthetic stuff because it seems to penetrate the seals a bit further.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Good luck with the new project.

Vincent, if I was doing a Standard instead of a Super right now, I would start off with the following suspension mods:

Front:
2" - 3" narrowed adjustable beam from RLR,
CB Performance Dropped Spindles
Whiteline Adjustable Swaybars
Porsche 993 front brakes

Rear:
Swayaway Adjustable Spring Plates
Whiteline Swaybar
Camber Compensator (if you keep the swingaxle)
RLR Tranny Raise Kit (to offset the negative camber of swing axle)
Koni Adjustable Shocks
944 Rear Brakes

Bugsoup, no it did not leak at all... as far as the miles on the motor not sure the odometer is broken... the motor was built back in 93 and has only seen about 2 years worth of driving... and my friend is very easy on cars... he sold his Passat with 140k miles with the origanal clutch....

Thanks for the advice on parts I think i want to play around with this car and see how it does then I can always buy a super and use my experance to buld a nother one...
