My project's back from paint

Well, here she is. I included a before shot in case anyone didn't see it. I also tackled the headliner today. Not bad for a beginner. Let me know what you think.

Don

Looking good. Now comes the fun part. I love putting one back together after all the paint/body/headliner work is done.

Yeah, it should be all downhill now! This far has been a real chore.

I don't think the pictures do the color justice. It is YELLOW!!! My wife says I should bolt a flip out stop sign on the side and take the kids to school. It's really '04 Mazda Yellow. A bit of orange, but only a hint. And I'm pretty happy about the headliner. I thought it would be a lot harder. The only real problem I had was right above the door openings. Those pinch tabs don't really pinch so well. I think I'll have to try a couple more tricks to get that just right.

At the moment, I'm redoing the vent wings. What a PITA! Those seals are a good form of torture, Especially when you've been sniffing glue all day! But I have to get them done, windows need to go in tommorow. Hopefully, it will go as well as the headliner.

looks great! love the color. i have been debating about a yellow car for a long time. looking forward to seeing the progress. go at it so you can be driving that thing this June for Grosses Wochenende.

also, check your email for a message about the VKG site. will be a great way for you to document the progress.

No off switch. Fortunately the city is going to start subsidizing my project... it's now classified as a street light!!!

Anyway, here's a couple more shot with the windows in. The wife and I got them in today. Not too bad until we got to the doors. Man those inner scrapers are a PITA!!!! The door glass is super tight. There's no way it can rattle. I hope the windows will roll down!

I'm posting all of the pics on the VKG site too. One day I'll get around to writing up the build.

It took about 3 hours. It's really not as hard as people make it out to be. Granted, mine is not perfect, but it looks nice (and it saved me lots of $$ doing it myself). I would get the video from jBugs for reference. It helped a little. And, watch out for that glue! It is potent. Take frequent breaks, or those fumes will have you laid out on the driveway.

And another tip, I wouldn't use the vinyl headliner again. It looks nice, but it is very thick. Makes it difficult to bend it around the window lip. Also, it makes the window rubber look funny where there is a seam. I think the preforated headliner would be easiest to put in. But the vinyl sure looks nice.

Lastly, don't be scared. I literally lost sleep over this part of the project. I had 2 days to get the headliner in and the windows in. Two jobs I'd never done before. But like I said above, it was a lot easier than I thought (except for the doors, but that's another story). Give it a shot and you'll be surprised.

Thanx for the info man, it calmed me down a bit ...still a little worried, but I'll check out the video and see what happens. I'm still a long ways off from ever putting the headliner in but thanks for the help anyways!

I guess the only other thing Im worried about now is having enough clearance for the window regulators with the suicide hinges....but that in its self is another story !

I've been updating my gallery on the club site, and I see everyone else has too. Good job.

Anyway, I put the eDead on the doors this weekend. I hope this stuff works out okay. I get a nice dull thud when I tap the panels now. I think I'm going to go with a mastic (Dynamat or some generic product) for the package tray and floor boards. I've got to sort out my leakage problem on the drivers side first though. I put the plastic on the doors with the hope it would solve it, but no luck. I think it is in the vent wing area. I can see a small open area through the door. But I won't put anything on that floor board until it's fixed.

I'm going to try and put it all back together in the next two weeks. Maybe it'll be running by then. I've got to refinish the gas tank first though. Be a good topic for a tech article.
