Welding up the oilpan...

I have a spare oilpan and I'm thinking about shortening it.
I am by no means an experienced welder, and all I have is a hobby flux-core welder.

Do you think this is doable ?
I know Mikey did it, but he's a much better welder than I am... and I'm pretty sure he has a better welder too....

What do you think ? Hints ? Tips ?

Rob.

You could always use a fuel tank sealer afterwards to fill any pinholes, I used rustbullet on my fuel tank and it worked fine...

Just make sure both surface's are clean no oil /paint/ put bevel 's n pieces w/grinder , practice on same thickness material always maintain travel speed/ angle of nozzle.

Before I try and reinvent the wheel, does anyone have a drawing on the best design for oilpan shortening. I was thinking of one with "wings" like a Moroso style pan?

I want to give this a go rather than import a cast pan

Thanks but I am in Thailand and by the time I import one the cost doubles, never mind that exchange is impractical.

I need to do this myself

Anyone have a drawing on how to shorten the oilpan, and adding wings to regain capacity?

Next month I'll be shortening a bunch of the up for a friend of mine. I think he charges between 150.00-175.00 without a core. You can reach him at michaeltevis@hotmail.com

G'day guys
heres my shortened sump. I have made sure that it carries the same amount that the standard sump carries. 5 litres to be exact. WRX engines fail from a lack of oil as they are under oiled from the factory. if u shorten the sump & decrease the capacity, u may spin a big end bearing sooner rather than later.
My sump cost me $45 to make. $45 for the steel & a mate welded it up for me.

Jak,
How much is yours shortened by? How does it look internally, did you keep all the original baffling? Please stick some pictures up when you get it installed! Do you plan on relocating the oil filter too?
Cheers,
Rich
PS I enjoyed your update on the aussieveedubber forum, nice to read about some real world experiences...

I shortened it by an inch. This makes it level with the standard headers, I could see no point making it shorter then that. The standard oil filter & cooler stay in the factory position.
regards
Jak
