What Car?
“what car?”
I am a 58-year-old VW/Porsche enthusiast, as is my son…. We are always asking each other the hypothetical question, “if money was not a factor, what car?” How about a “German Look” early square back, with a nicely massaged Type IV motor in it…………. there are some really nice new cars out there, but there is nothing like a car built just for you is there? What is your car of choice, and do you already have it???? |

Welcome to the sight!
I have two cars I am working on now... 71 1302 Super GL 67 Beetle Dragster I love both of these cars....but if money were no object I would build a 69 Notchback completely GL'd out. The car would have modern influences from Porsche, Mercedes, Audi & BMW. It would have a full leather recarro interior, Porsche Gauges, Porsche 5 speed trranny with LSD & 2.6L Type 4 motor with 911 cooling system & fuel injection out back. I will hopefully build this car after my 1302 is completed.

vujade,
That notch sounds like about what I had in mind for my Squareback. I do however envision widened painted steel wheels with stock hubcaps, a slight departure from the traditional GL. -Jim- |

This is my vision- '71 1302 gutted interior, no sound deadening, all interior panels painted same color as exterior, Recarro seats, sick roll cage, full instumentation (possibly high-tech 996), 915 or tiptronic tranny with a healthy 2.4+L with a montster Turbo. Rear suspension would be a custom coil deal and front suspenion would be just like the JSport's racer. There would be a external oil cooler infront of the front spoiler and I haven't quit decided if there would be a wing on the deck lid or a small Remmele spoiler on the roof. A couple of scoops in the rear carbon fiber fenders, running boards unpainted c/f, deck lid, rear bumper, dash, front hood, front fenders, front bumper all painted c/f. Big Reds all around, servo master cylinder. It would be a steet legal monster, not the quitest ride in the world, it would sit in the garage in the corner just waiting for the weekend to come around to devistate all in its path both on and off the track. This is money is no object. Hey I can dream can't I?
Nick Oh ya the wheels would be Porsche 17's but the sick I think they are called 10 Spokes. |

You got my vote on the square back GL.
If money would be no concern I would do it. It is nice to see something different. Alex |

Why not go the whole hog and build it around a tube frame chassis, 4wd, TIV 2.6, full engine management, turbo, power steering, Servo assisted ABS 6-pots, the absolute works! 20" rims with rubber bands would be sweet too!!
O.K maybe I'm getting a bit carried away!

Hm........
One option would be to just dump the money into my 1302. Leather Recaro/Sparco with harnesses and cage. LARGE T4 with a porsche shroud, turbo and IC. Quaife 6-speed universal rear engine gearbox. Forged 17" wheels with some sticky tires. Fully adjustable coil-overs all around. Carbon Fiber everything. 911 (996) gauge cluster. Ungodly brakes that'll put you through a window, Custom electric wing/spoiler/decklid from some porsche, maybe a 911 (996) Turbo. I could go on, you know... Or, the same thing to an early T1, using 18" Porsche turbo wheels. Or keep the Bug as-is and buy a Porsche GT2 and buy tuner parts and boost it to, oh..7 or 800HP

Well, I think there is nothing cooler than a convertable Ghia (pre '67). There are a few restorers out there making custom panels, and there is lots of room for a big T4.

A notch is and always will be the coolest VW ever. Any type 3 has the coolness factor and is a great car for any project. I'm building a '74 Super 2.2L turbo T1, EFI, cage, blah blah blah. The car will have full interior, b/c driving a bug on the street with no carpet or sound material gets annoying. Especially with straight cut gears. I'm also going to try to keep the exterior clean. I don't want anyone to know the potential. It does have 993 brakes and Boxter wheels though. If money wasn't a problem: Tube chassis, 911 powered, turbo (no question) notchback. 6-speed sequential and why not AWD?
