I got a long block!

I was finally able to build my long block! This is the result of four days, around twelve hours a-day!

Big thanks go out to Jake Raby, and the rest of the RAT team for letting me build it at his shop. Please do not call or e-mail about building your motor there. This was a one off deal for projects I helped him with over the past few years.

This motor is based on a GE case with some mods to use 914 items in it. It has 105.7mm "Nickies" with JE pistons, 84mm crank, chevy 2inch 5.5 h-beam rods, RAT 9225 cam (comparable to a web 86c), ARP case thru bolts, ARP head studs, LE 200 (highly modified) cylinder heads, and a Kennedy Engineering 914 flywheel machined to use a 228mm disc with 915 spline hub & stage 2 P/P . It has taken longer than expected to get to this point, but I'm very happy. I will go back and do the break in and dyno runs after the first of the year. I need to build my header first. This has given me motivation to work on my car again!

Here's a few pix for the engine porn type!

This is a big step in the right direction to be behind the wheel of my OWN VW

Winterjam time might be around my dyno time, but that's a show I would like to have MY OWN ride at anyway. Never been to the Greensboro event. Thats inside right? Might go to "the farm" this year. Thats always been a fav of mine since the IVWA days.

Looks GREAT!

With such a large cc-d engine, why did you not use the LE220's?
A 86c seems almost very (too?) mild for such a beast.

Tnx for the nice pictures!

They are like the LE 220's, thats why I said "highly modified".
It was going to be a "full roller" motor, but the 1.4 rockers are failing. So, the roller cam was scrapped for a flat tappet. The 84mm stroke is the reason for the 86c. The #2 and #4 exhaust lobe is close even with clearancing the rod cap. I would like my valve job to last for some time. If the rockers are worked out... it will go "full roller".

Nice to see that long block on your stand. It has been a long road. I hope the remaining portion goes quickly and you are on the road soon.

Its a fix for 914/universal dip stick tubes that are bad, or conversion in my case (no pun intended ) Something Jake came up with. It's not easy to do. Mine was even harder due to case not having one in the first place. There's several steps/tools involved to do it right. Its his deal... you would have to ask him. Sorry man.

Thanks man... it has been awhile, but I'm VERY happy so far! Now for it to be on the road will take some time. I'm still frustrated with my after market front fire wall. Looks like one will have to be fabbed for me to be happy. Dyno time will be in February . EFI system TBD... still looks like electromotive at the moment.

I have the same dipstick and tube. Its an aftermarket small block chevy one. The tube needs curving around, and then the case drilling to accept the larger diameter tube compared to the stock one.

Cheers
Paul

OK, its not recent work, but I forgot to include this bit. I made a sump extension ("Tuna can") for better oil pick up in the twisties. They sell something like this, but more fun for me to make it! I know the bolt head is BIG, but I will remember not to over torque it.
