Gas heater

That is an Eberspächer BN2 gas heater. I have one in mine. Nothing to be scared of. I love mine.

Yeah, that's what it is alright. We guys who live in the colder climates love them. Way more heat than the heater boxes can provide and right up front where you need it. (but still not on the windshield) The standard Beetles have them running 90 degrees to the dashboard down the drives side of the trunk, the Supers have them across the front of the truck behind the dash, as this one is installed.
