A GL ambulance on the track. Wow! Some hard looking rides there in that bunch. Amazing stuff.

Those aren't body kits, they are for aerodynamics. The trick is trying to get the aerodynamics to work while not making it ugly, but sometimes it's just not possible. Of course not picking that fugly green would have been a start.

Unfortunately, are far as lift is concerned, it's my understanding that you couldn't built a worse-shaped vehicle if you tried, so any addition that helps is a good one. The last 2 blue ones aren't even bugs at all, they just look like them, they are full blown race cars, not even street legal, that have tube frame chassis and are powered by watercooled mid-engine setups.

yeah, i know the purpose behind them, beetles are scary at speed. Next vw project i do will be a ghia, I'm tired of my flat windshield getting chips in it, a tiny pebble at 100mph makes quite a ding

LOL! I think keeping lift down is doable, but the drag coefficient of a beetle is terrible! Adding wide wheels and tires and wider fenders really adds up total frontal area and combined with a horrible Cw makes it tough to run high mph without huge power.
