In the beginning.....
Here is an article (in German) from 1973 showing a Reichart T4 conversion in a 1303.

Now I'm relatively new to this TIV stuff, but it looks like he did not convert it to upright cooling ??

That's correct. I believe Riechert is the one that originated this set-up for the Type 4 conversion. Porsche has used this on its 917 race-cars if my memory doesn't fail me.
Some feel this is a superior method of cooling. Maybe someone else can chime in on this subject? I do know that this set-up is tougher on the v-belt and the bearings of the supporting pulleys. Cheers, Richard |

Great article Joe ! Too bad VW didn't catch on to this way back then ...
Rob, this is another alternative to cooling a type 4 in a beetle. Sandeep |

there were loads of UK built TIV powered bugs that used a flat porsche fan arrangement in the late 80's/early 90's too.. i remember marvelling over them back in the day...

The first time I seen it was in the mid to late 80's.
I was truly amazed! Now after 15 years of wanting one, I will finally have mine late this summer

The "German" Look
What amazes me is how stock the outward appearance of the car featured in the article is. Likewise with the interior. Only a group of gauges on the dash that blend in quite well. Even the tire and rim selection is relatively minimalist. We've come quite a long way in the "look" that is now considered "German".
