at the local Bug-o-Rama here in Norcal I saw what I thought was a bug that had a porsch 6 in it. Does anyone know if this has actually been done or if what I was seeing was correct?

It has and can be done but the rear has to be cut up and modified. I put up a site on Geo****ies (now Yah-poo-poo) back in 1998 and there are a few pics. Look on the "engine swaps" page.

Am I right, that the weight on the rear is now too much, Superman? :silly:

Just kiddin, errrmmm, such conversinos look, besides it's HP rate, pretty ugly. There were a handful conversions here in Germany, done by a Volkswagen dealer back in the late 70's, early 80's.

They used the complete 914 suspension and body, welded all into a bug, resulting in a middle-engined beetle with perfect weight setup and hi-po!

Forgotten something....

There's a shop in Great Britain, who welds the 914 chassis parts to a beetle by customer's demand. Max Morley from Volksspares London gave me the tip, he would bew a good man to spreak with!

Fitting a flat 6 to the back of your bug means headaches but a lot of power and reliable at that from the factory.
The biggest problem you'll have is fitting it all in!
You will have to use a 911 gearbox (I would suggest a 911Sc engine and transmission) to handle the power.
The 911 engine weighs a lot more than a bug engine and the chassis would not be up the job on it's own.
Also the 915 transmission has no mountings for the bellhousing so you would either have to weld on pads, run it solid mounted using the engine and trans bolts or cut off the framehorns and run a roll-cage which supported the back of the engine (my choice). This is a lot of work and not really somthing which can be done on a car which is currnetly on the road, I'd want to do it mid resotration or atleast take the body off the chassis to clean everything up after fitting it.

Then you have the oil system (need a tank etc) and the ignition and injection systems. You need the whole lot from a car... it would be easier to find a rolled 911 and buy the whole lot.

Mike, why didn't you weld up two aluminum brackets to your gearbox housing and drill the mounting holes in? Normally that works!

Go with a mid-engine and 914 parts, to get even more headaches but a original optics beetle, instead of making the car 15-20cm longer!

Oliver, Yup welding blocks onto the 915 works. But the chassis still isn't up to the power...
I'm fitting a 911 SC engine and trans mid-mounted to my Oval but I'm building a new chassis. I don't think you could use anything from a Bug chassis when doing this kinda thing though.
