oil pump leaking only when i turn off motor. why?

i have a oil leak dripping off the bottom left hand corner (opposite side of dipstick, left when looking at crank pulley) ONLY when i turn off the motor. in drips for like 3-5min then stops. when the car is running it does not leak. i can not understand why this is happening.
any ideas?
what should i do?

Hey pete,

theres an oil leak on the suction side of the oil pump and/or galleys somewhere. when the pump stops-a-sucking, oil starts-a-drippin.

Try an anaerobic sealant like manufacturers use nowadays. It only cures where it needs to and the rest* magically disappears. No more gaskets :)

Good call - Loctite 518 is such a sealant. When I put in an oil pump, I use no gaskets - just this stuff. I put it also around the pump body to seal against the case. I make lots of oil pressure, and my cast iron pump body is turning orange from rust (i.e. no leaks :-).

cool, i think i have some at work. :) isn't it a flange sealant? i believe i used loctite 518 to seal a servo motor to a robot last week.
