porsche fan - removing alternator from fan case?

I'm in the process of stripping down my porsche fan assy (911SC)so I can get the fan & case fully polished :D

I have removed the fan & removed the long studs that hold the alternator to the porsche fan case. I have tried drifting the alternator out but the thing won't budge.

any tips as it is starting to frustrate me?

If I got right, you want to remove the alternator unit from the fan ring. If you have already dismantled the six long M10 bolts, nothing else securs it. It's simply stacked because of the corossion. You have to just tap it -lets say with a hammer and a piece of wood- anywhere on the unit on solid body-not on the connectors. I think the middle of the unit is the most rigid point (where the ball-bearing is mounted). Pay attention though: If you have all the six bolts away, you must keep together the three pieces of the unit together (front cap, rear cap and the winding) otherwise you could damage the winding in the back cap, where it is fixed on the connectors.

Sometimes if it is difficult to separate, you can put it in a press to remove the alternator.

using some blocks of wood, a hammer & a drift the alternator popped out :D

fan & casing now away at the polishers :D

Thats good. Sometimes they can be a real pain to get out, and you always have to worry about damaging the bearings!

I polished and clearcoated mine a couple months ago, being that its made of a magnesium alloy it oxidises very quickly. the clearcoat only serves to slow the process slightly.

if you have it polished plan to get it clear powdercoated. this is the only way to keep the shine.

I personally am going with "almost chrome" on mine, bought the powdercoating equiptment from eastwood and I'm almost good to go
