im looking to install a turbo, but i also want an air condition. i live in south alabama and it gets pretty hot and humid here. i want my comfort and performance. i thought of adding a custom hidaway turbo under the passenger rear fender. kinnda like the hidaway from cb, but on the oppisite side. and running a blow through carb sysytem. im thinking one single, central carb will be better for room space but would love to have dual carbs. but still thinking about i need more room.

the ice ac system i want to use mounts on the drivers side of the engine. its the same system seen on the beetle in the latest hotvws . special edicion beetle. the space is cramped.

so anyone have any good ideas if this will work??

I've got a kit that was developed by Hellbug here in Australia. The turbo mounts to the left of the gearbox and it uses a centre mount Weber DMTT. Its a real neat fit and the best thing is that it uses fully stock internals. You just need to use 90.5 or 92mm Barrels and Pistons. Its been tested on a stock 1835 and can do the standing quarter in 14.2 secs. Let em know if you want more pictures to show you how you can put it together.

matara, that seems to be exactly what im looking for. it looks so clean and uncluttered. even if i didnt install the ac , this system seems to leave you with more space to work on the engine.

how can i get in touch with hellbug.
please post more pics in detail.

Hey matara,

Can you post pics of the turbo plumbing and location of the turbo?
I would like to see how the turbo gets mounted next to the tranny.

Thanks in advance.

Hellbug are no more, so you can't buy this kit anymore!! The turbo sits on the left hand side of the tranny, and the inlet plumbing comes up through a hole in the firewall, across the firewall in the car and then out through another hole into the engine bay and into the carb (weber 32/34 DMTT).

Here is another shot showing the exhaust mount. The exhaust runs down beside the rocker cover and across the rear valvance. The turbo muffler is not shown but above you can see the tailpipe that mounts to the exhaust on the right hand side

Next up if the oil feed to the turbo. This comes from an adapter that screws into the oil pressure switch, and is a hard line back to the turbo. The return comes out underneath and returns via a line back to the rocker cover (with a pipe welded into it).

Close up of the turbo. The turbo is fed through an intercooler that I have to mount on the opposite side of the car and create a scoop to pull some air through it!

Lastly heres a picture showing the exhaust system that runs across the motor (opposite way to a normal heater box). All four exhuast ports are fed back to the turbo.

The turbo is an IHI from an Isuzu truck.

The car its going in is a 61 Factory Karmann Cabrio beetle running on 17x7(front) 17x8.5(rear) original 993 Cup Turbo Twists.

I'd appreciate any feedback on this setup.

Cheers

Excellent!!!

I have been searching for pics of those setups for a while!

Do you notice any additional heat being transferred into the car?

Hey moderator, do I have to start a new thread for these questions?

so is the turbo actually in the car? or under it? i assume there is some part of the turbo setup running through the inside of the car? if so does this create more heat inside?

do you have any more pics of the setup in your car?

thanks

I think it will work with the CB kit w/dual carbs if you rework the pipes on the cold side(turbo to carb).

Does the pipe from the carb go down behind the shroud or through the firewall cant quite tell from the pix. Does anyone have any pix of the turbo in position looks like a really tidy set-up.
