I've just seen the Scat Volkstroker T4 crankshafts in the Cool Air catalogue, all strokes same price. Is there any alternative cranks out there? Other than these £950 cranks?
Supply and demand aside, why are they so much more expensive than T1 cranks?

Aircooled.net do welded ones which is the usual way to have a stroker T4 engine

They are probably more expensive for a few reasons. There are probably 1,000 type 1 engines built for every type 4 built. And lets not forget the fact that they can charge whatever they want since people will pay for them. Lets not forget the exotic factor. The engine in some cases came from a porsche so with the name comes the increase in price.

That is supply and demand.. So the Scat T4 and T1 cranks are all forged from the same steel, and manufactured in the same way and then inspected using the same techniques?
oops didn't try AC.net  thats a smart price, I'll speak with HSL and see how much the price is at the end of the day..

Hi Matt,
The aircooled.net forged Billet Type 4 cranks are now $ 1250,-- , which relates to the 950 pounds you mention.
That is actually not too bad, since they used to be $1.500,-- An awfull lot of money of course, but it is the heard of your engine. besides, for that 1500 dollar, they weren't even availible for many years, so whats the price of something that isn't availible....
What size are you looking for?

99% of my engines get factory modified OEM TIV cranks.. The Scat cranks are not worth the added money!! I twist stock based cranks to 8,000 revs and have no issues, AND they are 1/2 the cost.

Thats good to know, but at that rpm and say a 86mm stroke and 2" rod bearing diameter (so having 'little' overlap of rod and main bearing) wouldn't crank flex become a problem?
I know, its difficult to decribe what you would call 'a problem', but still.

Hi Wally,
I'm looking at 78mm+, ('have been *looking* at this T4 for 5 years..) I can justify the cost of such a crank, as I don't think I'll be satisfied without trying the Nickies...Would like ceramics too... Street car with the best heart I can install.
Hence very slow progress  still have too many options.
Jake,
out of the 99% of the cranshafts you use, how many are similar to the $500 aircooled.net 'shafts?
I am a little confused about the term factory modified OEM. Is this the same as remanufactured and modified NOS cranks? Or fully sorted used parts?
Matt
I'm also inspired by Russ's stock cranked beast.

If I am not mistaken, the A/C.net cranks are custom done by DPR, same as Jake's cranks. DPR's welded cranks are by far the best; aircraft guys in the know use welded cranks all day, with no issues. Save the money between a welded and billet crank and spend it cryo'ing your engine or even to spend on ceramic lifters and ARP Hardware, or heaven forbids, Nickies :-). For the type 4, a cheap alternative to forged pistons are KBs. On the type 1, i've match honed cima/mahle 94a/b s to Nickies.
