Yes it has been done. There are 2 short film clips in the multimedia section on the main page of this web site or a Bay Window bus with a 911 eng/trans. As far as how it was installed,,,,I do not know. But it looks fun to drive.

dimentions of all the flat 6's are approximatly the same (untill they went liquid cooled) so for your application, newer and larger displacement is better.
there were technical advances throught the years that usually made the newer model engines better than previous years. but it all comes down to the dollar question, how much money do you have. no matter how much money you have to throw at it, with porsche engines, you can always spend more.

Hi Fred,
I'm planning on fitting a 3.6 with a tiptronic gearbox from a 1995ish 993 Porsche in to my 71 baywindow.
Having spoken to a few people who have done these conversions before they recommend the earlier engines, however the 2.7 is not a very reliable engine (again this is what I've been told) so it's a difficult choice to make, perhaps you might want to speak to your local Porsche specialist as he will be looking after older cars and should therefore know their weekness's
Basically if you want a more reliable engine you will need a newer one but this will make it more difficult to fit.
I'm not too sure if I've helped much here

The 2.7 liter had an overheating problem since Porsche bored the cylinders bigger and didn't increase the size of the piston oil squirters. This is only what I have read on a few 911 websites. When I was looking for an older 911 to buy I kept my search limited to 1982 and newer. The 3.2 liter (210hp) engine was the first one with hydraulic cam chain tensioners which are better than the spring loaded units of the earlier years. If you are just looking for more power you might want to consider the Subaru SVX flat six. They are right around 200hp and they are supposed to be very reliable, if you don't mind the radiator. :D

Someone must want to pay 300 bucks for a set of plug wires... 400+ for an Alternator... So on, so on..
I rebuild 911 engiunes up to the 3.0 era as well. A STOCK rebuild starts at 10K.
6 cylinder parts definately have the Porsche price tag.

A good used 2.4 or 2.7 can be had for under 2k. If you look for a 2.7, find one that has been rebuilt already and had the head studs timecerted in the case. A good running 3.0 can be had for 3-4k, check that the head studs have been replaced with steel ones and the dilivar studs thrown out, they are prone to corrosion and breakage.
Many of these engines are available as the early and mid year 911 guys are upgrading to 3.2's and 3.6's.
Also expect to pay 1k for a good 915 transmission, double that if you find one with a 7:31 ring and pinion.
Part prices aren't as bad as people think if you know where to look and can do your own work. BTW, plug wires are only 189 and alt's 250.
If you don't do your own engine work, look at a scooby conversion, its been done many times very well and is probably half the cost. I would think that the scooby conversion is more comon these days also.

A lot of people asked me why I didn't go this route... Jake said it well.

Hey Jake,
Do you have any info available on your 6 cyl rebuilds? I know a few guys here in NC that could use someone good to do a rebuild.
