View Full Version : Say Hi to the new GL project!!

After 12 hours of driving total she has arrived home, my new 1973 Super Beetle Sedan. When i got there i knew what to expect but not this much. Not only is she rust free and fully intact...she runs too!!!! $500 well spent i must say. All doors open smooth, windows roll up and down easily and all lights are in working order...the engine could use a slight tune up ( been non op for 3 years) but other than that she is awesome. I just need to have some time to rip off all bad parts and replace them with new ones, like fenders, door panels, etc, simple things really.

ENJOY the pics

The plans for it are make it a daily driver, stock engine for a while because i want it to sip on gas during these high gas price times. Of course it will get some nice disc brakes, blacked out trim, all interior will be black, Maxx Struts, and 17 inch Porsche Cup wheels or twisties i am not 100% yet but heres what i want it to look like in the end.

Brian,
looks like a nice solid base car :-) You think you have high fuel prices? We are about to hit £1/litre in the UK..

Jeff,
Start a new thread, it will be a long one! What plans for the ecotec, will it fit under the decklid? paint? are those wheels on properly? brakes? Looks like it has a bright future!

Rich,
Waaaayy too early to start a build thread, but you bet I will when it kicks off. I am at LEAST a year away from being able to invest in parts.

I dont have any concrete build plans yet, other than the Ecotec. I bought that used engine and ordered an adapter from KEP (pretty much my parts budget for the year  ) so I can do some mock ups, trying to show some folks over at the STF what it takes to get it in a stock bodied bug. I guess I could start a thread on that part once I start mock up.

The trouble for me, and I've watched others do the same, is getting carried away with the build. If I'm gonna do this, might as well do that. Next thing you know, a simple brake upgrade turns into a tube frame balls out money pit.
Too much dreaming/designing going on right now in my brain.

Jeff-

**Forgot to add, wheels are some old 19s that are unusable. Just rolled up into the openings, no suspension in the front and swing in the rear ****

:D I wasn't pointing any fingers!

My first thought is to try and keep it simple and low cost and just focus on the Eco conversion but there's always sooooo much trick stuff being done on here that my imagination gets to cooking and I want to take it to the ultimate... deep breaths, calm down, keep it simple. :bawling:

Brian,
I really like the clean look of your 'vert. I'm sure now that you're doing a hard shell, it's gonna look as smooth as the pics you picked to build from. Those type of deals just don't happen in my part of the country, VWs here are completely worn into nothing or swiss cheese or both. I would love to find a commuter ride like that and build it just like you said. I paid $500 just for the shell/pan you see in the pics, it is rust free but thats about it, pretty rough all over.

Nice start Brian. Looks good for $500. A complete running and driving car is worth at least $1,200-1,500 in our area. Maybe more depending on the body, pans, interior...

I managed to get my Ghia shell, an early body '64 on an IRS pan '74 with brand new uninstalled floor pans, for $300. It's not perfect, but for $300 I can't complain at all.

You know there was a nasty rumour going around that Jeff was a threadjacker......He also tries to get others to join him in his online mischief.

Good project. The car looked like it was white in the 1st few pictures. If you made it a twin of your vert you could do weddings etc. with both cars.

Phat73VW
April 6th 2007, 02:04
Just some super strength paint remover. It was all done by applying with a brush then letting it sit for a few momemts and then scraping it off with a plastic scraper. It made it really really easy. I wouldnt have done it any other way because it was quite the time saver.:D

hemitheus
April 7th 2007, 19:29
If you want a really effective paint stripper at a very low cost you can do what I did.

Go to walmart or your local grocer and get dawn power dissolver. Its in a blue bottle by the dish soap (its to clean gunk off of pots and pans)

Spray it on the paint

wrap it up with saran wrap

let it sit 24-48 hours (not too long or it will dry out and not in cold weather because it wont work)

peel off the saran wrap and the paint just falls off. If you use a pressure washer and/or a scraper it works better.

My car had 5 repaints over the OG color and i was able to do it all. (2 bottles was enough to strip an entire fender)

at $2 a bottle its WAY better than sanding... ill post pics once i get home.

Hey Phat73 - awesome find!!! You seem to be making great progress already on it . What colour are you planning on painting it ? You say you are staying pretty much a stock engine , but what about future plans ?

Panelfantastic - I have to admit that I am not too sure about the ecotec engine in the bug - any plans to get this all under the deck lid , or are you going to modify . Are you leaving the eco stock , or any plans for a HP additive of some sort? I work for GM , and I know a fair amount about the eco (I'm GM certified to rebuild the eco) , so I know it can handle a fair amount more power . What about going to a transmounted front wheel drive type of set-up?(still in the rear , of course)

:woohoo: **UPDATE** :woohoo:

The car did not get done in the one week like I had said before due to me getting sent out on the road for work almost 5 months. Progress was at a stand still the entire time.

However I just recently picked up my engine from Jon at TOPLINE and am starting the assembly on that so I can put it in soon. Also put new seals on all the windows so that when the headliner is done they can install those as well. Then once its running and has all windows in I can drive it to my friends upholstery shop and get the carpet and seats done.

Here are some pics of the progress as of today.
The first few pics I didnt have the new Kamei spoiler on but then you see it found its way on!!

Jazz Blue rocks. as info for others, they have used it on the R32's (A4) and i think some GTIs. just a stunning color. i had a Plymouth Grabber Blue bug when i was a kid (circa 1984). a little lighter shade. it is still on the CCC site if you can believe it. expect plenty of attention.

Its red Beetle has the hood of the engine raised in the from above part, this aid in the much refrigeration of the engine?

Would be 180 degrees celcius, Fahrenheit, Kelvin or Rankine?

This temperature would be of the oil or the temperature of the engine in the generality?

The drive home was awesome!! It may only be a 1600cc with dual Kadrons and a little cam but it pulls nicely on very steep hills!!

I have to give the biggest thanks to Jon and his son at TOPLINE for doing an absolutely AMAZING j-o-b with the build of the engine and the installation. It is sporting all new engine tin, new TOPLINE exclusive firewall kit and lets not forget the all new longblock!!! It purrs like a kitten and drives smooth as a factory installation.

I have to go give her a nice bath now since she has collected quite a bit of dust at the shop for over a month. Then its time for a nice cruise down route 66 to fill up ithe tank! ENJOY the pics!!!

OK well here is my little story from yesterday. My friends Rezie and Felix own a tuning shop called Genesis AutoSports here in Rancho Cucamonga where they work on all late model cars like audis vws, bmw, mercedes, etc. They do great work and are a very friendly group of guys. They have been wanting to see my bug as soon as I got it running so I went down to show him the car and they loved the color and the way it looks modernized. They were so blown away that they said they wanted me to roll with them to a upcoming car show that they were all going to go to with their watercooled cars and be apart of the represenatives for their shop. I said sure of course since I love going to all cars shows of any kind. Being as funny as they are they kept heckling me about not having the interior done yet and I told them in due time it will be done. When the wife and wallet allow.

So Felix says, "hey you need some cool racing seats to match the look you got going on." He was asking me what style I like and I said, "well I really like the Recaro style seats that some cars come equipped with from the factory like some JDM hondas and mitsubishi evolutions." Felix had a pair of seats on the rafters in the shop just sitting there and when I pointed them out and said thats what I think would look good in the car. He said,"those ones there? You like those? Yeah those will look great in there." "How much you want to buy them for" he says? I said, "well I know seats are not cheap and I cant buy anything today but yeah hold them for me and Ill get them after I get the headliner in." He told me nahh.. you are taking them now." After we joked around for a minute about the whole situation he up and says, " ok heres the deal. Im going to put these seats in your car and you are taking them home for free... well not free you have to drop off some of that good food from your work here every so often. ANNNNNNNNNND you have to bring the car to the show with us in August and sport a shop sticker... you think you do that?." I couldnt believe that my friend had just said this. So I accepted his generous offer and thanked him numerous times. So it appears now I have a deadline to get the car up to snuff to hang out with $40,000 plus modified cars. AHHHH NO PRESSURE!!!! ha ha ha well here are the seats and there is only one problem. They are brand new seats and have never been installed but they are missing the seatbelt hole plastic houseing because he took them off for another pair of seats. I just need to source them and BAM they are good as new!!!

Of course I had to do some test fitting and I must say I will be having the seat sit low or as it sits in the pictures because its a night and day difference in comfort and all around placement.

Now all I need is seat brackets for the seats and I am in business!!!

THANKS AGAIN TO REZIE AND FELIX AT GENESIS AUTOSPORTS!!!!

Oh yeah I also threw in some new shots of the car as

P.S. I also got a chance to meet EFFVEE (Francis) today when I was going home. He recognized the car from the build up thread and wanted to check it out. It was an all around great day!!!

SHE IS HOME!!!!!

Fantastic job!

(I made a note to myself on the reflective tape for the interior door panel so it can be seen when opened. Nice touch!)

You have earned every right to be proud.

Thanks for the link! Did you notice a difference in the air flow at higher speeds? I care a lot more about performance than look. Thanks again!

It helps a lot for highway driving

Allthough if you are running extremely low you beat it up pretty bad

it is pretty tough for scrapes but it doesn't take sharp impacts to well

I love the last shot there, I've always been a fan of white on blue. Got any specs on the wheels?

Yeah I just bought those on Monday cause I have always wanted to have a white wheel with the Jazz Blue. I really like the fact that they are wider and super light. they are 15x8 with et20. I have 195/50/15's on right now but I am changing the fronts to a 165/45/15 so I can bring the front down a bit.

15" looks awesome! \They look kinda like compmotive wheels. Can you get 165/45r15 locally? I thought those were euro only sizes.... Smart car tires are another options.:D

I agree all the way, and yes, they look the dogs, still the best way to lower any car, especially a Beetle, is smaller wheels and tyres. funds permitting after the motor is finished for my upgraded build, it will be going down onto 13" wheels and kevlar hot rod tyres for circuit racing, weight saving and pan lowering at the same time...

Welcome back!
I like your older wheels - the cool grey 6-spokers from 2008... You may have listed them earlier in your thread, but what size/offset were they? They look to be a terrific fit at the front...

They were Velox VX6r's 17x7 et+40 they were also really light. I really wish I hadn't sold them.
