View Full Version : Temp Sensor install

Guys,
Any tips on where / how to install a water temp sensor ?
I don't want to use the stock location as that one is used by my (stock) Ecu.
I tried tapping into the end of a copper 'T' fitting, but I think the copper is too soft.
I want to plumb it into the coolant cross-over manifold loop.
Any ideas ?
Thanks,
Rob.

Rob,
Good to hear you are still around
I am not sure what type of threads your sensor has, but if it is a NPT thread, Home Depot has an assortment of plumbing goodies.
To plumb my intercooler water pump, I used some NPT tee's for 3/4" ID pipe. The tee's all screw in to a commom block so you could substitute one of the extensions with the water sensor, depending on the thread.
Lanner could always fab you something out of aluminum

Hey Sandeep, thanks for the reply, that's a good idea, I guess I'll be off to the Home Depot soon.
Yeah, I'm still around. Haven't done much to the Bug though.... Family and work are just keeping me too busy.
Although I've come up with an ambitious plan: Next April the lease on my WRX is up, and I want to try to us the Bug as my primary car through the Summer....
Not sure if I'll be able to do that, but I'll try. The main thing will be the current cooling setup. If that proves not to be sufficient for the motor, then the plan will fail..... will keep you posted.

Hi
On my motor, just to the left of the original sensor there is a nice flat spot for a sender hole.

Hey Rob,
On my JDM 2.0 turbo engine the crossover manifold had 2 temp. sensors installed - I believe one was for the computer and one for the gauge? These both use a metric parallel thread - not directly fittable to most aftermarket temperature senders. I'm keeping one of the senders to use with my Megasquirt, but the other hole I re-tapped with 1/8 NPT. I did this a while back and it was really easy - IIRC is was a simple matter of just carefully feeding the tap into the esxisting threads and tapping away. Enough meat there to totally re-thread the hole (I "might" have had to drill the existing hole out for the tap? but I don't think so). Did this with the manifold removed for easy clean-out BTW. I did the same with the oil pressure sender plug in the front of the motor to fit standard Autometer senders.

on my JDM EJ20TT there are also 2 temp sensors on the water manifold, 1 for the ecu and 1 for the dash readout. I just used the one for the dash.
