Hi there.
I also have a 1303 superbeetle, and have done the exact mods you talk of. I welded up the vents beneath the windscreen, smoothed and painted it. I use an eberspacher lorry cab heater in my spare wheel well that is plumbed into the fresh air box. This demists the front windscreen really well  I am typing a second article up tonight which I will be contributing to the articles on this very site.... Cya, Sam C
