914 front rotors and interchangebility with VW
The question is regarding the interchangebility of the 914-4 front rotor on a VW Karman Ghia's. Are they the same part? Visually they look very similar, but I don't have a 914 part infront of me to fully measure it up. I know there are two types of 914-4 front rotor, the 72 and earlier, and the 73 and later. Are any of these interchageble with the VW units. The reason I ask is that I have access to the 914 rotors and want to know if they will fit on a Ghia. (I'm just replacing the rotors on the ghia).
Any help is greatly appreciated. |

The 914 front rotors (from 70 to 72) fit the '73 type 3 and 411 cars. If your car is a type 34 Karmann then you could fit the early 914 rotors with the 73 type 3 spindels and calipers (I didn't try that yet but I'll do it on my '69 Squareback I'll let you know). I also read that with the 70-72 914 cars an early 320 i BMW front caliper could be used without any mach. work. The same should apply to the late type 3's I'guess. A BMW mechanic told me that they've done that conv. on a 914 and that the braking was improwed. (Have to try that one also).
With the type 1 based Karmann Ghia the 914 rotors might fit the spindels (the wheel bearings are the same as far as I know) but then the larger calipers of the 411, 914 or late type3 would have to be adapted. You'll have to drill and tap the caliper mounting holes on the spindle for larger screws. Than you'll have to check the calipers alignment. I think it's worth to give a try. The added braking power and feel should pay off. Good luck. |
