What engine size to use? 1776, 1915 or other?

Hello all,

I am working on a 1967 vw beetle project and I am in need of some information about engines. Currently I am building a 1967 euro-look beetle, with wide Porsche rims (9 inch in the rear) and an IRS setup, etc, etc. I would like to have a engine to put into it when finished and currently I know nothing about them. I would like to be able to show this car when I feel like it, but mostly I would like to be able to drive it when ever I want to and for however long suits me without having any troubles getting it started or keeping it running.

So, with all of that in mind, what is the best engine for power AND quality as a daily driver? (kinda)

What do you use to push your projects down the street? Would you have done anything different if you did it over?

And last, what places are good choices when looking to buy a engine, and is it beter to go with a turn-key or build it up myself? (keep in mind I currently know nothing, or almost nothing about engines)
