Could the problem of bump-steer be near eliminated by having two track-rods of equal length?
If you look at the steering mechanism on both torsion bar T1's, steering box '02/'03 and R+P '03. Integrate elements of each into a new system for a relatively un-modified torsion bar front. Fuel tank may need raising or replacing. If you Use the idea of using a second stripped out steering box as an idler mount (Like Steve C's hill climb friend). Connect the two Pitman arms with a length adjustable idler. Attach the steering dampner and equal length Track rods to the idler. A symmetric steering response? Could it work better? Matt

Now if instead of two short tie rods, you got two long tie rods and connected the right steering box to the left spindle, and the left steering box to the right wheel (like stock), then you'd have almost no bump steer at all. But I bet the criss-crossing tie rods would interfere with each other.

you're damn right. Also when the car is on the ground, the tie rods need to be level to the pavement. this will also eliminate bump steer.

In my original reply I stated that I thought it was a really stupid idea to eliminate the long (good) tie rod and replace it with a short (bad) tie rod.
I can't see how you could do a dual steering box steering arrangement without using only short tie rods. If you have any information on how you could do it with long tie rods, show us here. |

I'm with you on the long (good) 'rod, think medium
akin to As an Engineer I appreciate the need to address the resultant lengths of each steering member. Porsche's kompact 'tank straddling, bootspace earning steering and <25hp was never meant to be a race car. And Bumpsteer was inherent. I'm sure Prof. Porsche was aware of this and made a 'note to self' struts und 'rack for T4 Beetles!
