The W-code engine was also used (in almost identical form) in the injected 411. 80 HP and 99 lb-ft of torque, DIN spec. Dealing with the oil filler and dipstick issues will require some work. Note that the 914 engine does this from the top, not the front (914 orientation, fan front).
Is the compression too high for a Bus? I don't know. Get a decent amount of cooling air to it and I would say it's at least worth a try... --DD
