The chrome trim secures the glass, the rubber that you have is easier to fit but NEEDS the trim, most replacment rubbers will be the type without the chrome which is a little harder to fit but like you say 'it does look better' without the chrome, so remove the glass as yetibone described and replace with new rubbers (I bet you bent the chromes beyond all recognition any way

When you go to replace that rubber, get it from a reputiable shop, such as west coast metric. Also, J-bugs has good rubber components, and will sale it to you as the PHATEST kit on the market...every rubber piece in/on a bug....for around $500...of course that is..if you need all that....
I think a regular "callook" style window seal kit, (for all 4 windows, not the doors though) is about $40.
