possible for single idf to run good?

guys, i'm getting tired of the dual carb thing. i currently have two single idf manifolds, one has huge holes where the carbs mount to the manifold and the other has holes about the size of the bottom of the carb. also the first mentioned manifold has the two barrels totally separate of each other while the second one has a hole between the two tubes allowing some sort of balance between the two. is it possible to get a single to run decently and get half way decent gas mileage?

my setup is as follows
1600dp w/stock heads
dual 40idf's
1.25 rockers
svda w/compufire(idf's don't have enough vacuum to work properly with 2 carbs)
1 3/8 header and single quiet pack

You could always go with a Progressive setup, but I wouldn't recommend it. I had a ton of problems with mine. I just could never get it set up right. Some guys have luck with them though.

Alot of the baja guys use a single 40(IDF I think), but I don't think they are recommended for street use. Aircooled.net has a good tech article on their site about carb choices. The problem with all single set ups is the pre heat to the manifold (and the jetting with the Progressive). Unless you are willing to make your own intake, or find one modified already, I don't think it's worthwhile.

Personally, I'd go with the Weber dual 34's. From everything I've read, they are easy to use, set up, and they stay in tune. You can get a set for $350 new. That's probably what you'd spend setting up a good single carb.

i used to have a progressive(actually still have but i have someone buying it) and while it did take some work, i finally go it running good and loved how it performed. i also had a set of dual ict's. this was the first mod i did when i got my car over a year and a half ago. thing is, that was before i started doing all the work myself. i kind of wish i had started messing around with those first but of well, plenty of time has passed and i've learned a ton since then. wy goal is to get the single idf to run right, hopefully the third time is a charm.

at least now i'm armed with a vacuum advance dizzy and a lot more know how.
