Is a VW semi-auto starter the same as Porsche?

Steve, I'm doing a similar conversion to you, EJ20T and 915 into 1303. I also have a VW automatic self-supporting starter. I've tried it and it physically fits into the hole in the gearbox for the starter and the studs and bolt holes line up but the thing I haven't tested yet is whether the teeth of the starter pinion and the Porsche ring gear are right for each other. If they're not, does anyone know if you can switch the pinion to match the ring gear?
