915 shifter
I just purchased a 915 transmission and I was wondering what kind of shifters and linkage works best. I heard that the original 915 is not very good because shifting is not smooth and it is pretty easy to down shift from 5th to 2nd missing 3rd and 4th. Any suggestions would be great. I see the WEVO has a gate shifter for about $1000 and other suggestions cause I would rather use that money else where on the car. Thanks

The original 915 shifter is a work of art already, especially compared to a bug shifter or a 901 shifter. Look closely at one in your hands and you'll understand why.
The sloppy shifting is caused by (partly worn) couplings and bushing further downstream the shifting action. Funny thing is the original porsche coupling at the tranny nose-shiftrod has a build-in play!! This is done to accomodate the for-aft movement of the engine/tranny, preventing it from being pulled out of gear. Makes sense, but not needed in a bug with good engine support. There is an upgrade for the coupling bushing: get one and while your shopping at Pelicanparts, also try to get the factory short shift kit, which was available for the 3,2 cars. Fits all 915 shifters and work like a charm. I have the above combo in my bug after I did the same research you did Cheers, Walter |

Sounds good I guess that I need to try how it feels shifts before I try to change how it feels and shifts. I was just wondering if anyone had come with other ideas. I will try the orginal set up unless someone knows of a better system.

I agree the 915 shifter was good enough for porsche for many years why would it not be good enough for your conversion......don't reinvent the wheel just make sure your shift linkage and rod function flawlesly so the shifter can do its job.
