I think part of the confusion is the link has a pic of a 4½-inch wide wheel. I realize the pic is an example of the 5½-inch wide wheel you want and not the actual set of wheels themselves, but I needed to re-read the entire thread to be reminded of that. This sometimes happens as threads get extended into multiple posts.

Obviously, a 5½-inch wide wheel can accept wider tires than a 4½-inch wide stock model.

The 914 was a VW-Porsche joint venture. Only in America were they marketed as Porsche only. The wider wheels were available for the 914 and on some Volkswagen special editions with offset being the difference. I don't know the offset numbers but what the Samba source said rings true.

The difficulty with a stock bolt pattern is there are not very many German Look options available. And what is available is sort of borderline. Changing a stud pattern is an expense. Some are less expensive but a bare minimum would be considered inexpensive by most definitions.

Do what you have to do; do what you want to do within your parameters.

Well I know that 4 x 130 is not a common pattern, but i've chosen these:

17 x 7 wheels, specially designed for a bug

Would you consider them GL?

nice wheels, that company make other wheels?
I only asked about the gt wheels because i was offered some for free but since wide tires cant be put on them i wont waste money to pay s & h for them.

They do, they're BBW brand (I know.... but that's how it's called)
http://www.bbwwheels.com/

That's one good thing about living in Mexico, great demand for bug specific stuff
