EJ20T to Type 1 gearbox

I would like to temporarily connect my Subaru EJ20T engine to a swing arm Beetle Type 1 gearbox simply to get approval on the engine swap from the Authorities before going whole hog.

The problem is that in Thailand these types of mods are not encouraged and I need to get it past them one step at a time. Engine swap now, chassis mods next, and then body mods.

I have the Suby engine, KEP adaptor, clutch, flywheel and starter in hand.

Not sure on what is needed to connect the Suby to the T1 gearbox, and if any of the 915 adapter stuff will work?

915 adapter should work, the bolt spacing is the same as the VW gearbox. if you haven't already done it, you shoudl just try bolting them up and see what happens. If they're just checking for quality of fit and security of fitting then you could probably leave the clutch and flywheel off and just use the adapter. Put a starter motor in the hole in the gearbox to avoid arousing suspicion...

best of luck

I need to drive it into the inspection station so that they can check the engine VIN, and change the registration book to show the new engine number.

Good that the 915 KEP adaptor will work. What to use for a clutch and flywheel?

Can I fit or adapt the Type 1 flywheel and clutch to the Suby, or is the 915 kit another direct fit - too good to be true I's sure

Would install the 915 box now and be done with it but this is a swing arm pan and the box has 100mm output flanges. The box and 944 narrow arms will have to wait until the body is removed for the next phase of bureaucratic hoops.

When I have my EJ20t speedster, I converted from swing axle to 915 using KEP parts. The adapter plate is the same (although sometimes the plate hasn't been clearanced enough for a 915 but as that is what you have it will be compatible with a type 1).
You would need the correct KEP flywheel and type 1 clutch to get it all working though...

What clutch do those set-ups use? 915 and 901 respectively?

the clutch is usually dictated by the gearbox, i.e. if a 915 gearbox, use a 915 clutch etc

So if I have it right, I need a special flywheel but could use my existing T-1 clutch long enough to drive it for inspection and back.

Can the T-1 flywheel be machined or any other alternatives other than buying one from KEP. Kind of a waste to buy a special flywheel for such a short time, and machine work here is REALLY cheap.

KEP kit I have is Subaru to 915.

I didn't get my adapter kit from KEP, I got it from DS Tuning in Germany. Basically, the flywheel is a centre to match the bolt spacing of the engine and an outside to match the bolt spacing and friction face of the clutch. What they do is make it thicker to allow for the extra thickness of the adapter plate and leave a boss with a needle bearing in it to suport the input shaft of the gearbox.

I suppose if you have a resourceful machinist or precision engineer that you know and gave him a VW flywheel and a Subaru flywheel and instructions to add 10mm in thickness (presuming your KEP adapter is 10mm thick) then he may be able to mate one to the other without having to buy a whole new kit...
