Well Wally, instead of writing or talking about it. I'm actualy working on the rollcage right now. The plan is that next season I have the rollgage installed, got the brake bias in order with the new front brakes. And this is a secret so shhhhh. I'm working on a 1776 or 1904 or maybe a 2110 type 1. Instead of posting every little thing I work on I plan on showing the build proces once its running in the 1303.
And yes it's a one off a kind rollcage for a bug. It's a OMP cage designed for an Alfa Romeo Sud Sprint wich was an old track day car off mine. When I sold that car I kept the rollcage. It fits with miner adjustments in a superbeetle. I bought a few rollgage pipes and connectors from OMP to make the whole car more rigit / stiff. First ruff drawing. Measurements are all wrong. Hi Erik,
Good cage, nice car . Do the front braces join near the centreline of the car and connect to the front frame? Also, It might be worth cross bracing the roof bars as at the moment everything forward of the rear hoop can lozenge due to a non-frontal impact. Why not do away with the short strut from the front leg mounting point up to the suspension leg brace and extend the door cross brace up to the suspension strut top? That will nicely triangulate everything on that elevation drawing. I am always wary of making cage connections into the mid point of the bars as it puts a bending moment into the connected bar whereas all the connections should be at node points to maximise the bar section properties. For my new engine I want a front mounted oilcooler. I could mount it in front of the Kamei spoiler or could cut holes or slits / vents in the spoiler so I can mount the oilcooler behind the spoiler.
I have found a less subtle solution at the swapmeet in Hannover Germany 01 May 2011. It's a Remmele frontbumer complete with spoiler and a place to mount the oilcooler. The air that past the oilcooler is directed upwards. So no air goes under the car and makes it possible to mount an airsplitter. The blinker holes are a bit to big for my taste so I will fix that first and spray it black. I will mount it as close as possible to the car body. When finnished I will post a picture of the end result. This is it. ![]() |

Nice find! Looks very purposefull, but would not have expected anything less from Remmele.

Hello GL fans. I still have the black '75 and its still a lot of fun. But I wanted sometyhing more family friendy. So I bought another '75 1303.
Restored by previous owner to stock specs. ![]() I replaced dented bumpers, installed popout's, new runningboards, TMI Black carpet, Leather Raid steering wheel, electric windowwasher, audio upgrade, H4 headlights, clear indicator lenses, leather Recaro seats, Original Kamei spoiler, lowered suspension and mounted 7x15 rear and 6x15 front original Fuchs wheels. It looked like this at Spa 2014. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() New carpet, oil pressure and oil temperature gauges and head temp. gauge. ![]() Right after the Spa meeting I started on the suspension and brake upgrade. Front. KW inox coilover set. Home made camber plate. 944 NA spindle (with hole for speedo cable) with custom bearing spacers. 944 S2 hubs without ABS. 944 turbo '87> brake rotors. 2006 Boxter S calipers on home made axial > radial adapters. 993 Cup-2 7Jx17 ET-55 Goodyear Eagle F1 195-45-17 under stock wing. ![]() ![]() Rear. 944 S2 torsionbars, koni yellow shocks, urethane bushings in trailingarms and for torsionbars, 944 NA hub on 1303 IRS. 944 turbo '86 brake rotor. 2006 Boxter S calipers on homemade adapters. 993 Cup-2 8Jx17" ET 70 Goodyear Eagle F1 225-45-17 under stock wing. ![]() I was afraid the camber plate with steel on steel mounting would carry the sound from the wheels into the interior. but its surprisingly quiet and comfortable. I used alot of sound deadening materials under the carpet, that also helps to cancel out any vibrations coused by rough road conditions.
