Heard a pop, now no clutch action

So I was out in the 67 Beetle last night, and about half a kilometre from home I heard a pop from the area of the pedals, and then the clutch wouldn't disengage, the pedal feels dead. I was able to make it home and coast in to the driveway. Since it was late and dark when I got in, I couldn't really inspect anything, so I'm looking for ideas as to what it may be, so that I can get parts ordered today to have a go at it on the weekend.

Prior to this, the trans. had been getting tougher to place in gear, more 1st and reverse than the others. Could this be a stretched clutch cable that finally let go, or should I be looking elsewhere?

thanks,
Ed N.
