What are 944T front hubs made from?
I need to know what grade (ie 6061/7075...etc) of aluminum 944t (87 and up) front hubs are made from. And the bonus question on top of that would be whether they are forged or cast (I can't really tell).
The main reason I ask is that I'm having a set of custom hubs made and would prefer to make them from the same or better material than what Porsche uses. I have made a set from 356 (modified CB's wide 5 units) and they work fine.....but I'm not comfortable using them and spend every weekend checking them for cracks (and I'd rather not be doing that). I've thought about purchasing a set from VDubCustoms....but I can get a set made local using 7075 for the same price sans shipping. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. ![]()

The 944T hubs are cast. I don't know which grade aluminum alloy was used to cast them, but I can tell you that they are plenty strong enough for a VW Bug. They are very beefy units. I'm in the process of installing 944T brakes on my 70 Type 1 and I'm not at all concerned about the strength of the hubs. Remember, these hubs were used on a front engine car that weighed nearly twice as much as a bug.

My plan is to make custom hubs so that I can select my tire/wheel offset and not use bearing adapters in the process. I've done the conversion using all early 944 n/a parts and wasn't not very happy with the results. I managed to correct the camber issuses (I was using 944 spindles)....but I don't having to get parts from Germany (balljoints) and maxxing out my suspension's adjustable just to get the wheels to look right.
It just feels like I'm rigged this thing and not really setting it right.
