Wich gearbox to use?

Hi there! I´m looking for answers regarding wich gearbox to use in my 03. I drive a type 4, 2,5 litre, aprox 160bhp. Up to now I´we been using the original wich works fine for race, but a longer fourth or a fifth would be nice on the highway. I´we got the tip on using a 912 gearbox, wich cars used ths?

Yes Porsche 912. Hard to find here in sweden...
Seen some 915 been used, maybee a better idea?

You are looking for a 912E (to be exact). This is a rare car (basically a 911 with T4 motor). The tranny is geared for the T4, but is a 915 tranny. Jake Raby has a daily driver 912E, and a extra tranny he is going to use for a future T1 GL project. www.aircooledtechnology.com

To get the tranny in the T1 bug@5speed is a good way to go.

Hi Mathias,

the 912-gearbox is not the best gearbox to recommend in your special case. In the 912 a type 901 gearbox with short ratios was installed. It was no 915. For the type 4 engine that you have I would recommend a 914-gearbox. Their ratios are much longer and they fit perfectly to huge type 4s.
A 915 is not necessary. The 914s stand upto 270 Nm easily and are much cheaper and easier to get than 915. Besides 915 are about 52-55 kg in weight, a 914 is about 42 kg.

The 912E had the 923 transmission. Basically a 915 close ratio 5speed (for the 4cyl) with a 901 bellhousing (to bolt up to 2L type4) and i believe T2 output shafts. Only 2000? were made.

My 915 is an early mag-cased one and weighs in at 44.3 kg
