The best solution by far are these bearing ones, especially made for beetles:

The ones on the left.

can the gwd torsion bearing be used with a 944 spring plate? and when converting to rear coilovers and getting rid of the torsion bars can this be used instead of a uniball system or a hiem joint?

Good question (for Gerd?) as I would like to know that as well and particularly for the spring plates of the 944 alu trailing arms (if they are different).
